Project Overview
The Shawn Walsh Hockey Center and Alfond Arena Renovation and Expansion project represents the most significant transformation of Maine’s only NCAA Division I hockey venue in its 46-year history. The project modernizes the Alfond Arena complex and preserves its iconic profile while strengthening gender equity and providing a preferred destination for high school sports championships, competitions and community events.
The enhanced Shawn Walsh Hockey Center includes new state-of-the-art locker rooms for the women’s and men’s ice hockey programs, a player development center with sports medicine and strength and conditioning spaces as well as a 42-seat film room, new and renovated offices for coaches and support staff, and expanded lounges and equipment rooms.
The Harold Alfond Sports Arena underwent upgrades to enhance the student-athlete and fan experience inside the historic building. Work included a new entryway complete with an expanded concourse area housing dedicated fan shop and concession sales spaces, the UMaine Hockey Hall of Champions and ticket sales.
In total, the project included 31,000 square feet of renovations and 21,000 square feet of additions. The revitalized facility elevates the athlete and fan experience while strengthening the University of Maine’s position as a premier collegiate hockey destination in the Northeast.
